Salamander Update: The purging Flame

Used from 40K Wikia without permission

After an almost 3 year hiatus from the Tournament scene, my Salamanders will once again take to the ‘competitive’ field of battle for the glory of the Emperor and their Chapter in a 1000 point 1-day event run by Mark – author of the Project Circle blog

Preparation for this Tourney has seen my Marines receive some much-needed attention at my painting desk, in an attempt to field an army that is at least completely base-coated.   My Vindicator was the first of many models to receive some much-needed attention.  A relic from several editions previous, I had completed the majority of the painting for a tournament held about 3 years back.  Now that the gunner and other miscellaneous details are painted, I can safely say that this fellow is finally complete.

The Librarian was the next model to receive my attentions.  Having relied on a Deathwatch Librarian for the last couple of years, I felt it was high time I actually made one for my Salamanders using the Sanguinary Guard Box.  As can be seen below, the conversion went very well, providing me with a model that is filled with dynamic movement and a great deal of character.

Finally, I’ve been working on getting two new Long Fangs painted (both with Heavy Bolters), as well as getting the plastic Assault cannon Dreadnought arm built and undercoated.  As per my WIP challenge, I hope to have these models completed by the end of the week, if not by the end of the month.

I hope to write up a tournament report Sunday afternoon, though that may be delayed until late Monday / Tuesday depending on how I’m going for time.

WoC Update: Avatar's of Wulfrik Pt 02

As a follow-up to the previous article, I wanted to finish reviewing the Avatar's of War Marauder Champion painting project I completed last December.  With the base-coating completed, I was able to begin filling in the fine details on the miniature which is the part of the painting process that I enjoy the most.  Like all the miniatures that Avatars of War produce, fine detail was not something this model was lacking in any respect which is both enjoyable and a little intimidating at the same time.  Considering the time that I've invested in the model, I'm very happy with the finished product, possibly with the exception of his shield which I feel could have a little more depth to it.  I've included a multitude of additional WIP pictures as well as a couple of pics of the finished model from a couple of angles.

Finally, before I go, I wanted to include a picture of another project that I'm working on this month in preparation for a 1000 point 40K Tournament to be held in a weeks time.  No doubt I'll be posting pics of the completed model in the very near future.

A New Year, a new set of Resolutions

My WIP Vindicator for my 4th Resolution

With a New Year beginning, like many other bloggers that I follow (Mark at Project Circle and Lenny from Tales from the Lennycave), I wanted to make a couple of resolutions that will shape my hobby development over the coming year.  After reading articles from both afore mentioned sites, I’ve developed a list of resolutions that contain restrictions of my own devising as well as some blatantly nicked from both Mark and Lenny.

  1. For each miniature I purchase for a Tabletop Wargame, I will paint 2 minis that I already have.  Like both Mark and Lenny, I'm hoping this will curb my impulsive spending as well had encourage me to paint  the minis I already possess.  The hard part will be when I run out of half-painted miniatures to work on and have to actually start from scratch again...
  2. All miniatures purchased between the 1st of January 2012 and 31st of October 2012 will be fully painted by the end of 2012.
  3. Paint at least one piece of terrain each month.  For multi-part structures, each component will count as a separate piece of terrain.
  4. Include a picture of whatever WIP project that is currently sitting on my painting bench with each blog article I post.  This item will then be completed within a month of the picture being taken.
With my resolutions decided upon, the only thing left to do is to make good on the 4th one.  As can be seen above, I've included a picture of my latest WIP project - a Vindicator Tank for my Salamander Space Marines.  While the majority of the miniature was painted previously for the last 40k tournament that was held by the Kingaroy Wargamers, I never got around to finishing the gunner that sits in the top cupola.  Thus far I've managed to paint the Marine's armour and complete the first sides of each of the tank hatches that will be providing him with a bit of protection from flanking fire.  While I've schedules a month to get him completed, I'm hoping that it will take much less time than that.

WoC Update: Avatars of Wulfrik Pt 1

For the last couple of days now, I’ve been working on preparing yet another hero model to add to my Chaos Army.  This is a model that I bought a year or two back when it was first released by Avatars of War.  The model’s pose, the eye-catching armour and the realistic sizing of the weapons immediately caught my attention and was subsequently purchased in a fit of impulsiveness that characterises all my Warhammer spending to date.

Starting out with the base model, I’ve removed the tab so he can be fitted to a resin base.  One of the cooler things about this model is that it comes with a range of weapon options that you can use to arm your Warrior.  I’ve chosen to give him a shield and an axe as Wulfrik is armed with a Hand Weapon and Shield.

With the model built, it was time to try out the Liquid Green Stuff to see how well it would work with metal models.  After successfully using the Liquid Green Stuff (LGS) on resin models, there was some concern about just how well would it work when used on metal.  Thankfully, this concern was unfounded and the LGS went on without a hitch.  As can be seen in the pictures above (and below), there are aspects on the  model's wrist and head that have received some attention and it has integrated itself seamlessly with the remainder of the model.

With the assembly done, it was time to undercoat.  There’s a decent chunk of armour on this model, so I’ve base coated the entire model Bronze to make my life a little easier.  A quick highlight and a wash or two will complete the armour while the flesh will take a little bit of extra effort.

With the base coat is done, and some of the base coat colours applied to the model and washed, the miniature quickly approaching a sound table-top quality.  As I'm currently involved in a challenge to have this model painted by the end of the month, you can be assured this will not be the last you’ll see of him.  I have plans to finish the detail work shortly, but for now, my attention is needed elsewhere.
